For any gym or fitness studio, the first step to a full class schedule and a thriving community isn't about sales - it's about getting your name out there. This is Stage 1: Building Awareness, and it's all about making sure your target audience knows you exist and what makes you unique. Here are the channels to focus on, the tactics to employ, and the metrics to track to ensure your awareness efforts are paying off.

Which channels should I focus on?

1. Optimize for Local Search

In today's digital world, your gym's physical location is just as important as its online one. Most potential members will search for "gyms near me" or “pilates studio near me”, and you need to be at the top of that list.

Your Google My Business page is your digital storefront. Claim and fully optimize your profile with accurate business hours, primary category, secondary categories, a descriptive bio that includes keywords that are relevant to your business, high-quality photos and videos of your facility. E.g. If you are a pilates studio, you want to make sure you select your category as ‘pilates studio’ and have keywords like “pilates studio”, “best pilates studio” in your description.

If you have a website built, make sure it is optimized for location-specific keywords in the titles, headers and content. You can also get listed in other local directories and platforms like Yelp or ClassPass if these are used in your area.

Actively encourage your current members to leave positive reviews on your Google My Business profile and other review sites to create social proof. Respond to all reviews, both positive and negative, to show you are engaged and value feedback.

Why is this critical for Awareness?

When people don’t know the area well and they are looking to go to the gym or attend a fitness class, the most likely search on Google is “gyms near me” or “boxing class near me”. These searches would be considered high intent leads. Your Google My Business page is the most important factor that allows you to show up for these searches organically. It’s free visibility for leads that are ready to buy!

2. Master Social Media

Social media is more than a place to post pretty pictures; it's a powerful tool for brand building and community engagement. You’re not just selling a workout; you're selling a lifestyle and an atmosphere.

Use platforms like Instagram and TikTok to showcase the energy of your classes, the passion of your trainers, and the community you’ve built of your members. Video content, especially short-form reels and stories, performs exceptionally well.

The goal of your social media profile is to provide value so even those who are not your members yet, want to sign up to your fitness business. You can do so by creating community first content like motivational quotes, recipes and nutrition guides or even quick workout tips. Video testimonials from members expressing how your gym or studio helped in their fitness journey is a great way to build credibility and a community at the same time.

Social media does give you the option to also run targeted ads / boost your organic posts to local audiences. These ads can be tailored to reach people in your local area who have expressed interest in fitness, health, or wellness.

Why is this critical for Awareness?

Fitness is visual. Social media allows you to showcase the energy, atmosphere, and results of your gym 24/7. It provides the highest volume of impressions (people seeing your name) and allows you to hyper-target local residents who fit your ideal member profile.

3. Engage Your Local Community

Some of the most powerful marketing tactics happen offline. Building a presence in your community can generate genuine word-of-mouth referrals. Partner with complementary businesses like health food stores, coffee shops, or physical therapists. For example, if you partner with a local coffee shop, you can offer a free class as part of their loyalty program and your members can get a 10% discount on their coffee.

Another great way to engage with your local community would be to organize or sponsor an event. This could be your local community 5K run or a free outdoor bootcamp or even partnering with a local charity helps build your brand.

Why is this critical for Awareness?

Partnering with local businesses and hosting events builds brand trust that digital media can’t replicate. This is the modern equivalent of powerful word-of-mouth, getting your name in front of people who are already plugged into the local ecosystem.

How to measure success?

Now you must be wondering how to know if things are working correctly. Building awareness is not just about sales; it's about seeing if your efforts are connecting with your target audience. Your goal with the above channels should be to build your brand name and share your vision for the community vs generating leads. These will come in organically!

Metrics to keep track of

  • Google Business Profile:
    • How many people are viewing your profile?
    • What keywords are people using to find you? (e.g., "pilates studio downtown," "gym with a sauna"). This tells you what's working in your local SEO.
    • How many people asked for directions to your studio? This is a strong indicator of intent.
    • How many people clicked the link to your website from your profile?
  • Social Media:
    • Reach & Impressions are the two fundamental awareness metrics. Reach is the number of unique people who saw your content, while impressions are the total number of times your content was displayed.
    • Is your follower count increasing steadily? This shows that your content is resonating and attracting new people.

Marketing should be easy

If the thought of algorithms, hashtags, and social media platforms makes your head spin, you are not alone. It can feel like a whole new language, but the truth is, you're already know the basics! The principles of marketing remain the same, no matter the channel. It’s showing people what you do and building trust.

Think of it this way:

  • Your Google Business Profile is simply a modern-day listing in the phone book, but one that everyone actually uses and trusts.
  • Social media is your community bulletin board, but instead of tacking up one flyer, you can show off your vibrant community to thousands of people.
  • Online reviews are just word-of-mouth recommendations, but written down for all to see.

Here is a simple, three-step plan to get you started without the stress:

Step 1: Pick One Thing and Master It.

Do not try to be on every platform at once. Start with your Google Business Profile. This is the single highest-impact thing you can do for your business at the start. It's easy to set up and maintain, and it's how most people will find you. Just focus on keeping your hours and contact information up-to-date and politely asking your happy members to leave a review.

Step 2: Use What You Already Have.

You don't need a professional camera or a team of marketers. Your phone camera today can take pretty good photos and videos! Take a few good, clear photos of your space, a class in action, and a few happy members. These simple, authentic photos are often more effective than professional, staged shots anyway. You can also repurpose the same content across all your channels!

Step 3: Involve Your Team.

You don't have to do this alone. Do you have a younger employee or a tech-savvy trainer? Ask them for help. Assign them a small, manageable task - like taking one photo a week or responding to a few comments. Marketing is a team effort, and you are the team leader.

Start small, be consistent, and you will see the results. Your community is already out there, and these tools are just new ways to reach them.
